No, an Osteopath is a primary health care practitioner, which means there is no need for a referral. All you need to do is call and book an appointment.
Most private health plans with extras cover a portion of the cost. Our clinic has a HICAPs facility which allows you to claim this portion on the spot by scanning your private health insurance card.
Osteopathic treatment can be claimed through Medicare with a Chronic Disease Management Plan. This Medicare scheme allows eligible patients with chronic conditions up to five allied health services per calendar year.
A chronic disease management plan must be prepared by your GP before consulting with your Osteopath. Patients who may be eligible are those who are suffering from a chronic, long standing condition.
This program entitles eligible patients to a rebate from Medicare for 5 treatment sessions per calendar year. Please note that the full cost of the osteopathic consultation is still paid for on the day of the treatment. You may then claim back your rebate from Medicare on the spot with an eftpos card from our HICAPs/Medicare terminal or present the receipt at a medicare outlet. The gap is still an out of pocket expense.
Yes, Osteopaths are able to treat patients supported by third party insurers such as Workcover, TAC or Department of Veterans Affairs.
TAC and Workcover patients are required to pay in full and organise reimbursement from their insurer. Reimbursement may not cover the full cost of treatment.
Department of Veterans Affairs patients must first obtain a referral from a General Practitioner made out to their Osteopath. DVA Health Cards (gold and white) are accepted as payment upon a GP referral.
Please bring any x-rays, CT scans, MRI scans or any other test results which you think may be applicable to your first consultation.
Upon arrival you will be asked to read and sign a treatment consent form. Your Osteopath will then take a detailed history of your condition as well as any relevant medical history including previous accidents, trauma or medications.
An Osteopathic examination will follow which involves analysing a range of active movements, hands on assessment of the problem region and other more specific tests as indicated. Your Osteopath will then discuss your diagnosis and proposed treatment plan before commencing treatment. Treatment plans are tailored to the patient based on their history, presenting complaint and response to various techniques.
Our Osteopaths use a variety of techniques including soft tissue and fascial release, joint articulation, muscle energy technique, joint manipulation, balance tissue tension, dry needling and rehabilitation. This is provided through manual therapy. In some instances, lifestyle advice may be provided, alongside self-management and exercise strategies.
Your initial consultation will last for up to an hour, and any subsequent consultations are half an hour.
Osteopathy is a hands-on manual therapy so you may be asked to remove some clothing. It is best to wear non restrictive, comfortable clothing and suitable underwear.
